I'm not sure if you have something against LG but it's not so trash as you might think. What I'm saying is that in this particular model (730V) it has a good picture quality.
I know than VA panels has better blacks and contrast than an IPS panel. But the IPS panels has some strong points too.
About the HEVC codec probably it loose quality instead of x264 but maybe in the future it will be implemented anyway and I won't need a new decoder if that happens.
I'm glad you prefer Sony (or any mark) against LG but I can tell you than the 42LB730V is a good TV. Of course it has strong and weak points but also an excellent quality image in my opinion. And also some interesting features.
