Samsung reveals plans for flexible Youm displays

We have heard a lot about Samsung’s flexible OLED displays in the past but at the final CES press event Samsung officially revealed the displays together with a prototype of a Windows Phone and flexible displays in different shapes. They are called Youm.

Samsung Youm. Remember the name as you will hear it a lot in the coming years, we are sure. The displays are based on OLED technology and can be created by using for example flexible plastic, flexible metal or even flexible glass.

At CES, Samsung presented the Youm displays and showcased how it is possible to integrate the displays into smartphones where the screen bends along the edges.

Samsung is working hard to start mass production as soon as possible but is still experiencing difficulties. Samsung says that they obviously plan to use the technology in its own gadgets but will also sell the flexible, foldable and rollable panels to other manufacturers. LG and Sharp are also working on flexible displays.

The Youm displays do not necessary mean flexible gadgets but can also be used to make devices thinner, lighter and more durable, as the flexible OLED displays are extremely hardy. Some people even discuss the possibilities of integrating the displays into clothing or other wearable devices.

Despite the flexible properties the Youm displays still offer the virtues of the OLED technology, including high contrast and ultra-fast response time. The biggest challenge right now is to increase resolution but it is certainly not impossible. Imagine the possibilities.
