The second most popular way to watch TV shows and related TV content is now on tablets, according to a study by Viacom. The change of behavior comes at the expense of PCs and the iPad is the most significant driver.
Tablets become TV screens
TVs are still the most popular devices for watching TV shows and movies by far but tablets are becoming more and more widely used. According to Viacom, 15 percent of total viewing in the US now occurs on a tablet.
More and more people use their tablet to watch TV shows
Smartphones are also popular but the study suggests that some viewing previously done on a smartphone screen is switching to tablets. The most popular genres are comedy and music, which also aligns with previous finding on PCs and smartphone. The traditional TV still dominates in reality TV, drama, sci-fi and sports.
The study also points to the fact that people are increasingly multitasking while watching TV. Many of the respondents say that they use tablets to multitask or as a “complementary experience”, which probably means that they are searching for fact, information or related content – or just browsing.
