Chinese Chimei Innolux (CMI) announces that they will start mass producing OLED panels in the fourth quarter of 2012. The first panels will measure 3.4 and 4.3 inches and have been designed for smartphones.
CMI to produce OLEDs
Display manufacturers are quickly transitioning to OLED technology. South Korean Samsung and LG have a head-start but the Japanese manufacturers plan to start soon. And now Chinese – based in Taiwan – CMI plans to move forward with their plans. But how can they beat the more established Japanese players? Well for once they are subsidised by the taiwanese government.
CMI exhibited their first TrueOLED panels a while ago
CMI will start producing small-size OLED panels at a 3.5-generation AMOLED plant in Q4 2012. Initially, only 3.4 and 4.3 inch OLED panels will be available but CMI hopes to expand in the near future.
CMI’s OLED panels will be branded TRUOLED and is based on RGBW; white OLED pixels with color filters. This is the same design as the one in LG’s coming 55-inch OLED-TV. CMI will be able to achieve very high pixel density over 300 ppi and very wide viewing angles, according to the company.
