Amazon challenges Netflix with $7.99 Prime service

Amazon’s Prime streaming service is now available on a monthly plan for $7.99, and Amazon is ready to take on Netflix. However, Amazon still needs more apps and content to become a new darling.

Amazon Prime is not a new service but today Amazon takes the first step in challenging Netflix for the streaming crown. Amazon Prime’s movie and TV show library is now available for $7.99 per month – or $80 per year.

The content library is still lacking and Amazon only has apps for a few devices, including Apple’s iOS devices and Samsung’s Smart TVs but we expect that to change over time. The Amazon Prime subscription provides unlimited access to some content and premium content can be bought for a few extra bucks.

However, Amazon Prime offers other Amazon services such as free shipping on items from Amazon’s website and monthly eBook rentals.
