LG: OLED will become mainstream faster than LCD

LG believes that OLED will become mainstream at a faster pace than CRT and LCD TVs, and has decided to increase OLED production further.

LG is focusing on OLED in a time where most other TV makers have decided to cancel their plans to invest in OLED production.

But LG.Display - LG’s display maker - has no plans to keep their OLED panels exclusive to LG products. They want the technology to become mainstream as quickly as possible, and is already supplying Chinese TV makers such as Skyworth, Changhong and Konka with OLED panels. 

Rumors suggest that Panasonic and Sony are also interested in buying OLED panels from LG.Display. A partnership with Samsung is highly unlikely on the other hand.

- “The OLED sector will become the mainstream of the global industry at a faster pace than cathode ray tube (CRT) or liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs,” said CEO Han Sang-beom


LG is currently constructing a new 8G OLED plant that will start operating in the second half of 2014. The initial goal was 26,000 substrates per month, but it has been increased to 34,000. From each substrate LG can cut six 55-inch OLED TV panels. 

LG is also considering adding production lines for small OLED panels for smartphones and wearables. Apple’s iWatch is rumored to use an OLED panel from LG.
