The UHD Blu-ray format arrived in 2016 and brought with it 110 movies in the best possible picture quality. This year, Hollywood is planning to release 250 additional UHD Blu-ray titles, according to DEG and reported by USA Today.
UHD Blu-ray in 2016
Despite sales of discs being on the decline, Hollywood is optimistic about the UHD Blu-ray format that currently offers that best picture quality for movies that money can buy.
Discerning consumers have welcomed the new disc format with open arms and in 2016 bought more than 1.8 million UHD Blu-ray discs in the US. Approximately 300,000 UHD Blu-ray players have been sold in the US, excluding the Xbox One S.
In 2016, a total of 110 UHD Blu-ray titles were released. The best-selling title in 2016 was Deadpool, according to trade organization DEG.
UHD Blu-ray in 2017
Hollywood studios expect to release a total of 250 additional UHD Blu-ray titles in 2017, according to DEG. All major studios except Disney/Pixar have committed to the format.
At CES 2017 in Las Vegas, Sony and LG both announced their first consumer players. LG’s player will be one of the first to support Dolby Vision.
Dolby also announced that the first Dolby Vision UHD Blu-ray discs will arrive in early 2017. 3 major studios have currently committed to release Dolby Vision discs. Dolby told FlatpanelsHD that it is in talks with all major studios but that it has nothing more to announce at this point.
