First 480Hz OLED panel for high-end gaming enters mass production

25 Apr 2024 | Rasmus Larsen |

Announced earlier this year, LG Display's 32-inch OLED panel supporting both 480Hz at 1080p and 240Hz at 4K resolution is now in mass production. Expect monitors very soon.

240Hz OLED panels are already outperforming 360Hz LCD panels in terms of motion blur due to OLED's faster response time. Additionally, you get much-improved contrast, color, true HDR pictures and more.

So a 480Hz refresh rate is expected to put OLED in the clear lead, handily beating the fastest 540Hz LCD monitors.

Now in mass production

LG Display has confirmed this week that its 32-inch OLED panel with a switchable refresh rate and resolution has entered mass production. - "LG Display’s advanced solution is Dynamic Frequency & Resolution (DFR), its own independently developed new technology. With the arrival of DFR, users can choose which to prioritize between refresh rate and resolution by adjusting the image processing speed. It has been applied for the first time with LG Display's 31.5-inch Gaming OLED panel," explained LG Display.

To fully utilize the OLED display's 480Hz mode, your PC graphics card must be able to render the game at 480 frames per second. However, the upcoming monitors will also support VRR (variable refresh rate). The panel also features MLA – micro lenses – that direct more of the generated light towards the viewer, resulting in higher brightness and better energy efficiency.

Monitors from LG and Asus

LG Display confirmed that the first deliveries of the new panel will go to LG Electronics for the previously announced 32GS95UE monitor. Later this year, Asus will launch the PG32UCDP, which is also built on the 240/480Hz WOLED panel. LG Display has also developed a 27-inch 480Hz OLED panel with 1440p resolution. This panel will be introduced in the Asus PG27AQDP later this year. Samsung Display's fastest QD-OLED is a 27-inch panel with a 360Hz refresh rate. Here is an overview of all the OLED monitors announced for 2024 so far.
