Disney+ starts making immersive mixed reality Marvel content

You will soon be able to immersive yourself in the Marvel Multiverse through interactive narrative-driven stories. The first title will be released exclusively for Apple Vision Pro.

Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm-owned ILM Immersive are creating What If…? – An Immersive Story for Disney+. They refer to it as their first interactive Disney+ title. It will be an hour-long mixed reality experience that will immerse the viewer.

- "As a kid, my favorite stories were about worlds beyond my own, advanced technologies, and heroes traveling across space and time. ‘What If…? – An Immersive Story’ is the next evolution in how we tell our stories, where fans across generations can experience them and live out the adventure alongside their favorite heroes," said director and executive producer Dave Bushore. "This experience kicks the door open to the Marvel Universe, and it’s a glimpse of what I’ve been waiting for my whole life."

AR and VR

The companies explained that it will be a cross between augmented and virtual reality, with viewers being able to control it using their eyes and hands. There were decisions to make along the way, which is why the experience is described as an interactive narrative-driven story. Disney+ said that What If…? – An Immersive Story will be released soon. - "This experience is truly groundbreaking and unlike anything we’ve done before," said executive producer Jamie Voris, EVP/Chief Technology Officer at The Walt Disney Studios. "It's an exciting new way to become a part of the MCU through a deeply emotional and compelling story."

The next step after 3D

Disney was one of Apple's launch partners for the Apple Vision Pro headset. Disney+ on Apple Vision Pro is also the first – together with the Apple TV app – to offer movies in 4K 3D, some even with 48fps HFR such as Avatar: The Way of Water. Immersive content can be seen as the next step after "flat" 3D. The Disney+ app is not yet available for Meta's Quest or other headsets.
