LG promises a 55-inch OLED-TV before 2012 is over. LG’s CEO of the display division, Kwon Young-soo, reached out to the press today with this interested announcement during LG’s second quarter financial announcement.
LG will be focusing their energy and investments on large-size OLED-TVs instead of small size OLED panels for mobile devices. 

LG 55” OLED-TV in 2012
LG has been investing heavily in OLED technology in the recent years and has mostly focused on small size OLED panels for mobile devices.  That changes now according to CEO of LG-Display, Kwon Young-soo, with LG’s new OLED strategy.


LGs 31-inch OLED-TV

The new strategy involves plans to shift OLED investments and mass production capacity to large-size OLED panels for TVs. LG simply believes that their high resolution LCD IPS panels are better suited for mobile devices. LG’s IPS panels are currently found in Apple’s iPhone 4 and iPad.

- "We will make no more investment in the sector (small size panels) judging that the OLED business is relatively less profitable than other products in the mobile sector," Kwon Young-soo says.
- "LGD will launch a 55-inch OLED TV by the second half of next year." he continues.


LG 31” OLED-TV

The 55-inch OLED-TV is planned for release before 2012 is over, which probably means approximately 1-1½ from now.

It was also stated that initial production capacity will be limited to around 10.000 55-inch OLED-TVs per month, and then increased based on consumer’s reactions. Kwon Young-soo also underlines that the plan is to create a real 55-inch OLED-TV and not just a prototype for trade fairs.

LG says that they want to focus on quality instead of quantity in the beginning - and the 55-inch OLED-TV surely won’t be cheap either. LG’s current 15-inch OLED-TV costs around 2500 USD.

Samsung is still focusing heavily on the small size OLED segment. LGs’s current OLED factory for small size OLED panels will continue to operate. We will keep you updated with more information as soon as possible.
