To aid us in our testing of displays here at flatpanels.dk, we have collected a series of useful test images into our own little program. The following features are available in this test (see details in the description below):
Evaluate the ability to produce the darkest colors of black and the brightest colors of white
Evaluate trailing
Examine the color scale
Examine the dynamic range of the display
Evaluate the homogeneity of the backlight
Examine the display for pixel errors 
Moiré effects and 1:1 pixel mapping


The test is available in 3 different versions, which will all work at all display resolutions: 
Ordinary HTML browser window you can maximize yourself (Macromedia Flash 8 plugin required)
HTML popup in 1280x1024 resolution as default, but the window can be maximized to suit your needs (Macromedia Flash 8 plugin required)  
Executable .exe version (1.6 MB) that does not install anything on your computer. Press CTRL+F or Esc to exit full screen mode (or use the program menu). No plugin required.

Explanation of the test
 
Main page : The test consists of several elements and the first that will meet you is the front page, the info box and the menu. To access the menu, move your mouse to the top of the screen. You can switch off the info box from the menu as well as change from full screen mode (.exe version only) and change page. 


On the front page you can test the monitor’s ability to show close shades of grey. Steps of 1% are shown at each end of the scale. 

Homogeneity: Here you can look for pixel errors and examine the homogeneity of the backlight. Use the black or white background to look for constantly lit or dim pixels. In this test there must be no pixels that have a different coloration than the rest of the screen. Use the black color to look for backlight bleeding.


Text reproduction: Here you can see if the screen has a tendency to create shadows behind text. Choose your text and background color using the sliders.


Trailing: Here you can investigate a simple type of trailing (do not mistake this for an actual gaming experience) by passing a box along the screen on different background colors. Keep in mind that the movement of the box is created by the processor in your computer and not by your graphics card - for this reason short flashes of tearing may appear, which is not an error in either screennor computer. 


Color reproduction: Here you can investigate the displays ability to produce colors and gradients. Use this to check for banding or dithering phenomena. 


1:1 pixelmapping: This test is mostly relevant for the TV-people. You can test if your display can accept resolutions from your PC that is in 1:1 physical correlation with the actual resolution of the display.
