We reviewed the first version of Philips Aurea some time ago. Since then Philips has introduced Aurea 2 and is now the third generation of Aurea; a slimmer version with Edge LED, is been introduced.

Ultimate Ambilight

Philips Aurea is the ultimate manifestation of Ambilight and Ambilight illuminates the back wall behind the TV and the frame around the LCD panel.

The Ambilight system consists of 252 diodes (LED) that illuminates the screen's transparent"Active Frame with Ambilight Spectra" according to the colours of the image on the panel. According to Philips this helps to relieve eye strain and intensifies the mood of the movie.

With Aurea 2009 Philips has also developed a new extra remote control that can handle the most basic functions to operate the TV.

LED TV

Philips new Aurea model is the first Aurea with a built-in LED LCD panel, also known as LED TV.

LEDs can offer better picture quality and reduce power consumption by up to 40 %. Philips has used Edge LED in Aurea 3, which also means that Aurea has become slimmer but that no local dimming is possible. Aurea 3 is 6 cm thick.

Philips has incorporated 100 Hz Clear LCD in the Aurea 3 as well, and specifies a response time of just 2 ms. In addition Aurea 3 has the Philips Perfect Pixel HD and Perfect Natural Motion systems.

Internet and Network

The new features include Philips Net TV, which is an Internet technology where you get access to services like YouTube as well as keeping yourself updated with weather and News. Net TV also allows users to surf the Internet as if they were in front of a PC browser.

Wireless DLNA (using Wi-Fi) has been integrated, too. DLNA allows you to wirelessly stream content such as music, movies and photos directly to the screen from another PC at home over your wireless home network.

Finally Aurea 2009 features 5 HDMI inputs and invisible touch-sensitive buttons on the frame.
