Apple TV version 4.4

Apple released firmware update 4.4 for their black Apple TV box yesterday. One of the most interesting new features is AirPlay Mirroring.

AirPlay Mirroring mirrors everything you see on your iPhone/iPad on your living room TV. It also lets developers use the feature for games where multi-player parties can be set up - as shown above.

With Airplay Mirroring, Apple has added support for developers. One example is Real Racing 2 where gamers use the iPad 2 as a “steering wheel” and "race track overview" while experiencing the actual race on the TV. The picture above is taken from Real Racing 2 but all game developers can incorporate these functions.

AirPlay has been supporting video, music and pictures on Apple TV for some time but AirPlay Mirroring adds a range of new exciting options. Learn more about AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring here.

Apple has also added a NHL (National Hockey League) streaming App as well as Wall Street Journal Live with video news, commentary and financial analysis reports.

A new iOS 5 feature is Photo Stream. Every time you take a picture with your iPhone it is automatically uploaded to iCloud and available to show via the Photo Stream App on Apple TV immediately after.

Lastly, the update adds support for Netflix subtitles as well as a new Trailers App.
