In a leaked 56-page document, Microsoft’s plans for the upcoming Xbox are detailed. The “Xbox 720” will come with TV apps, Metro graphics, Kinect 2 and act as a game and video center in the living room. Microsoft is also working on “Project Fortaleza”.

We have heard many rumors about the Xbox 720 and PlayStation 4; at least that is how people refer to them today. But now the first credible information regarding Microsoft’s “Xbox 720” has leaked – and it will be much more than a gaming console. It will also communicate with other devices in your home and act as an internet TV box.

The Xbox 720 name is not final but it the presentation mentions it. The leaked 56-page document also mentions a Blu-ray player, 1080p support and real 3D support. In addition, Microsoft mentions Kinect 2 that should improve accuracy over the current Kinect system and support up to 4 simultaneous players.

Gaming performance will be considerably better due to very capable hardware but Xbox 720 will also serve as the living room’s TV device. Microsoft plans to offer TV apps such as video services and therefore Xbox 720 will also get a “always-on” mode, which means that you never have to turn it completely off. Lastly, Microsoft mentions tight integration with SmartGlass; a system to combine all your screens, including your tablet and smartphone.

Kinect Glasses (Project Fortaleza)

Another interesting detail mentioned in the leaked document is Project Fortaleza - or Kinect glasses. It seems that Microsoft is developing virtual reality glasses; a system similar to the Google Glass Project.

Microsoft is working on several ideas, including virtual reality gaming where you can use your surroundings as an element inside the game. No concrete details are revealed but Microsoft mentions a possible 2014 launch.

Microsoft Xbox 720 is expected to launch in 2013 with a 299 USD price tag. According the document, Microsoft hopes to sell 100 million units and keep the Xbox 720 alive fo 10 years.

The leaked document was uploaded to Scribd.com here, but has now been removed at the request of Covington & Burling LLP, a law firm that has Microsoft as a client. The document is still available here.
