Sales of the Apple TV box are accelerating. At the yearly D11 conference, Apple CEO Tim Cook, revealed that 13 million Apple TV boxes have been sold so far. There is a “grand vision” for TV at Apple.
13m Apple TVs sold, half in the last year
Rumors about a TV from Apple have been floating around for years but a true Apple TV has yet to materialize.
Apple has sold 13 million Apple TVs
In the meantime, Apple is selling the small, cheap Apple TV box. Tim Cook commented on it at the D11 conference yesterday, saying; “popularity has been larger than we thought. We're not marketing it like we do our other products. So it's encouraging”.
Tim Cook also says that when unveiled Apple sold only a few hundred thousand Apple TVs per year but since then sales have picked up considerably. Since launch, Apple has now sold 13 million and over 6 million of those were sold in the last year.
Market data has shown that the Apple TV and the Roku boxes captured 90 % of the US market for streaming boxes. Google’s bet on the Google TV box, on the other hand, has largely been a failure.
Tim Cook declined to comment on a potential TV but says that Apple has a “grand vision” for TV moving forward.
