Plex is now free on PlayStation and Xbox

20 Dec 2015 | Rasmus Larsen |

You no longer need to pay the monthly Plex Pass subscription to use the app on your Xbox or PlayStation console. The company has made its app free on game consoles to bring Plex to an even wider audience.

Media streaming on game consoles

Plex has been free on Xbox 360 for a while, and it is now also free to use the media player app for owners of Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. With Plex you can enjoy your locally-stored movies, TV shows, music and other media files on the TV.

Until now, you needed to pay for the Plex Pass subscription, which costs $5 a month or $40 annually.

Plex Pass will continue to offer access to advanced features such as premium music features, mobile sync, Vevo music videos, Trailers & Extras, and more. However, the basic functionality is completely free to use.

To get started, you need to install Plex Media Server on a PC/Mac or network hard drive, and select what content to share on the network. Then download the Plex app on your game console.

Plex also recently went free on Smart TV / Android TV and shortly after the company released an app for Apple TV.
