UHD Blu-ray from Sony

Sony Pictures - Sony's Hollywood movie studio - is already in full swing churning out UHD Blu-ray discs but if you want to watch them you need to buy a disc spinner from Samsung or Panasonic.

That will probably change soon, At IFA 2016, Sony unveiled its first UHD Blu-ray player that looks ready in form but not function. It is a classic Sony design that makes it stand out from the crowd.

Underneath the player were some of the first UHD Blu-ray titles from Sony Pictures, including Salt, Angry Birds, Chappie, The Smurfs 2, Ghostbusters and Hancock. It is not the most exciting catalog of films but especially the animation titles do a good job of demonstrating the potential of HDR and wide color gamut.

The product had no model name.

Sony has promised to launch its first UHD Blu-ray player before April 2017. However, most people suspect that Sony’s first UHD Blu-ray player available in the market will actually be the new PlayStation console that Sony is planning to unveil next week.

So far, only Samsung, Panasonic, Philips and Microsoft Xbox have launched UHD Blu-ray players. At IFA, Panasonic added a new, cheaper UB700 UHD Blu-ray player to the line-up.
