Google’s movie streaming service, ‘Google Play Movies & TV’, is now available as an app for Samsung Smart TV. However, only owners of the most recent 2016 models can join the fun. Movies in 4K are not available.
Google Play Movies on Samsung TVs
Google Play Movies & TV is obviously available via Android TVs, Chromecast, and Android mobile devices. However, Google has also started expanding to competing TV platforms. Last year, it launched an app for LGs’ webOS Smart TVs.
Starting today, it is also available as an app on 2016 Samsung Smart TVs. It is not clear why only 2016 models (update: also on 2015 models). When the app launched on LG Smart TVs it included models from 2012 and later.

The new app is a welcome addition to Samsung’s platform. A few years back, the company tried to launch its own movie store to compete with Google Play Movies and iTunes. The project was short-lived and killed in 2014.
The Google Play Movies app on Samsung’s TVs supports up to 1080p HD quality and offers an extensive catalog of mostly Hollywood movies. The app does not yet support 4K Ultra HD that Google just started rolling out.
New movies typically cost $13-15 dollars to purchase and $4 dollars to rent in HD quality.
