Plex can help you share your own content but the company is also planning to offer streaming content from other partners, beginning with news video from Watchup that Plex has acquired.
Plex to add video content
Watchup is a service that curates news video from around the world. It is currently working together with 150 partners, including CNN, Vox and Al Jazeera, in over 100 markets.
Watchup will be embedded into the Plex app as the company wants to offer content alongside your local media. All users of Plex will be able to watch news video starting from the second quarter of 2017.
- ”This kind of awesome, unified experience just isn’t possible for others, and we’re going to be building on that as we move forward to bring news media to you in a holistic manner within Plex,” the company wrote.
In the early days, Plex was often associated with getting pirated movies to play on your devices. The company has worked hard to transition into a multi-purpose app that lets you share local media in an easy and convenient way across devices. Plex is available on devices such as Apple TV, Android TV, Smart TV, game consoles, smartphones, tablets, and PCs.
Plex currently has over 10 million users. The app is free to use but you can buy access to more advanced features by paying a monthly fee.
This is the first step in a grand plan to turn Plex into a content provider. The company recently raised $11m from investors.
