BBC has made the decision to close BBC iPlayer on Sony TVs from 2011 on August 16, 2017 due to “performance issues”. These are models such as HX92x, HX82x, and EX72x.
From August 16, 2017
Sony and BBC has both confirmed that the BBC iPlayer will be removed on 2011 Sony TVs from August 16, 2016. This is due to “performance issues”, however no further explanation was given. Since it has worked in the past, it is likely to be related to a technical change at BBC.
- “While iPlayer will not be available directly through the TV, if you connect a device that’s iPlayer enabled you’ll be able to watch again through your existing TV without the performance issues affecting these devices, like the application or TV crashing while using iPlayer,” wrote BBC.
If your TV is affected you will encounter the following message on-screen:
This announcement follows a long string of similar announcements of discontinued apps. All Smart TV owners are affected but Sony owners have been particularly hard hit in the recent months with discontinuation of YouTube, the TV SideView app, PS Now, and PS Video.
Sony has released this list of affected 2011 models.
