TCL's new 6 series 4K TVs with FALD start at $650

TCL’s 6 series is the successor to last year’s much-acclaimed P series. The new TVs offer 4K resolution, Roku OS, Dolby Vision, and most importantly full array local dimming (FALD).

The 6 series was announced at CES 2018 and will start shipping in May. Unlike the more affordable 5 series TVs, TCL’s 6 series models will feature a full array local dimming (FALD) system.

In our testing we have found that a FALD system is what makes HDR possible on an LCD panel. The cheaper method of using edge-lit LED does not offer the accurate backlight control that is required for HDR. TCL’s 55-inch 6 series has 96 zones (up from 72 last year) whereas the 65-inch has 120 dimming zones, and while that is not a lot compared to the 500-zone count on the best LCDs, or the pixel-level luminance control of OLED TVs, it should get you started.

TCL’s 6 series will compete with TVs such as Vizio’s 2018 models, Sony’s 9 series, Samsung’s 8 series, and LG’s new “Super UHD” LCD TVs. Like Sony and LG, TCL’s 4K TVs will support the Dolby Vision HDR format as well as HDR10.

TCL claims to be “America’s fastest-growing television brand”. The winning formula seems to be affordable TVs packed picture technologies that actually make a difference combined with the Roku platform that offers access to more than 5000 apps.

- “Following a very successful 2017, TCL has developed new products that continue to raise the bar for a premium home entertainment experience. These TVs directly reflect the innovation and deep expertise that allows TCL to deliver a superior consumer experience for those who want more from the leading technologies featured in our TVs, like Dolby Vision and the Roku OS,” said Chris Larson, SVP, TCL.

The TCL 6 series is available now for pre-order with prices starting at $650 dollars. The TVs will start shipping in May.
