Apple releases iOS/tvOS 13.2 with new AirPlay, HomeKit features

29 Oct 2019 | Rasmus Larsen |

Apple has released iOS and tvOS 13.2 with 'Automatically AirPlay to TVs', support for AirPlay 2 devices in HomeKit scenes, and opt-in for Siri recordings.

tvOS 13.2 for Apple TV

Apple's tvOS 13.2 is a minor update after the company in September released tvOS 13 with Arcade, a refreshed home screen, multi-user functionality, new screensavers, and support for Xbox and PlayStation controllers. With iOS and tvOS 13.2, the delayed AirPlay 2 / HomeKit integration has gone live. This allows you to include devices such as Apple TV, HomePod and compatible TVs from other brands in HomeKit scenes and automations. You can learn more about how it works here.

In addition, you can now also 'Automatically AirPlay to TVs', letting an iPhone or iPad "discover and automatically connect to nearby AirPlay TVs you use frequently when playing content from apps you regularly use with AirPlay". Besides the Apple TV box, this should work with Samsung, LG and Vizio TVs with AirPlay 2 - and later Sony TVs.

Lastly, tvOS 13.2 includes an opt-in process for Siri recordings. A new splash screen explains how Apple is processing and using recordings from Siri voice searches on Apple TV. The tvOS 13.2 update arrives just a few days ahead of the official launch of the company's streaming service Apple TV+. The software can downloaded now for Apple TV HD (2015) and Apple TV 4K (2017).
