Netflix's gaming service is now available worldwide

03 Nov 2021 | Rasmus Larsen |

Netflix Games, which is folded into the Netflix app, is now available to all subscribers worldwide. At launch, five games are available on mobile Android only. Support for iOS is coming later. But what about TVs?

Netflix Games

Netflix had already commented on its plans to expand into gaming, and starting this week games are officially part of your Netflix subscription. - "We love games, whether it's physical games (Floor Is Lava), mind games (The Circle) or Squid Game. And we love entertaining our members. That’s why we’re excited to take our first step in launching Netflix games on mobile to the world. Starting today, members everywhere can play five mobile games: Stranger Things: 1984 (BonusXP), Stranger Things 3: The Game (BonusXP), Shooting Hoops (Frosty Pop), Card Blast (Amuzo & Rogue Games), and Teeter Up (Frosty Pop)," said Mike Verdu, VP of Game Development, Netflix. Netflix characterizes its games as 'mobile games' and they are currently available to download and play on Android smartphones and tablets only. There are "no ads, no additional fees and no in-app purchases". - "Netflix Games will start rolling out on the Netflix mobile app. First on Android, with iOS on the way," Netflix confirmed. There is no word on TV support but most Smart TVs would not be powerful or capable enough to run even semi-advanced mobile games locally in hardware in the first place. The average Smart TV's SoC is not optimized for gaming and has very limited storage capabilities. On the other hand it could be supported on more capable devices like Apple TV and Nvidia Shield. Netflix's mobile games are developed for ARM-based processor architecture, meaning that they will not run natively on game consoles like PlayStation and Xbox. However, they could run on Nintendo Switch – if Nintendo is open to the idea. An alternative route for Netflix could be game streaming.

What comes next?

Netflix has confirmed that it is developing a game based on the Squid Game series. It has also acquired Night Studio, the game developer behind Oxenfree. - "Just like our series, films and specials, we want to design games for any level of play and every kind of player, whether you’re a beginner or a lifelong gamer," said Mike Verdu. "And we’re just getting started. We’re excited to continue improving our mobile gaming experience and adding to our entertainment offering in the months ahead."
