Disney+ confirms that it is adding an IMAX Enhanced viewing option for 13 Marvel movies including Shang-Chi on November 12. DTS audio is also coming to Disney+.
Update 11.11.2021 The IMAX Enhanced versions are now available on Disney+, at least in some regions. They play in Dolby Vision. Update 9.11.2021: Updated with official information from Disney, IMAX, and Xperi (DTS) as well as Disney's FAQ for IMAX Enhanced.

IMAX Enhanced aspect ratio

Starting November 12 (Disney+ Day), subscribers will get the option to watch 13 Marvel movies (full list in the table) in an expanded IMAX aspect ratio (1.90:1) for a picture that is up to 26% taller compared to regular widescreen. - "Disney, Marvel Studios, and IMAX have collaborated for years to bring the world’s most popular films to the big screen, and on Friday we’ll start to bring IMAX technology to subscribers with IMAX Enhanced viewing in the Disney+ app," said Michael Paull, President of Disney+ and ESPN+. "We’re thrilled to create new value for Marvel fans and audiences on Disney+, and we’re looking forward to offering even more IMAX Enhanced functionality in the future."

Avengers: Endgame and Avengers: Infinity War were shot from start to end with IMAX cameras but the other Marvel movies only have sequences shot in the IMAX format. Non-IMAX scenes will be shown in regular widescreen with full black bars at the top and bottom. If you have seen any of the movies in the cinema you may have already experienced the IMAX presentation (which can be even taller in the cinema). - "For more than a decade, IMAX has helped filmmakers take fans across the Marvel Cinematic Universe in theaters and now that epic journey crosses into a new world: the home," said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX. "IMAX, Disney, and Marvel Studios are giving the fans what they want: the most immersive viewing experience throughout the life of a Marvel Studios film, from exclusive theatrical release to the library at-home where they can now watch the Avengers assemble with more picture than ever before." The press release did not state which HDR format the IMAX versions will rely on but it is most likely HDR10. Update: It's Dolby Vision. The 13 Marvel movies will automatically play in the IMAX Enhanced version. This is in addition to the regular widescreen version in 4K Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, which will also remain the default premium formats for other movies and series on Disney+. You can select between the two versions manually from the movie page's 'Versions' tab.

Immersive DTS audio

IMAX Enhanced will also bring immersive DTS audio to Disney+ in the future. It sounds like we should expect Disney+ to use the streaming variant (compressed audio) of DTS:X but it is not entirely clear from the press release. - "DTS is proud to be an integral part of IMAX Enhanced and we are looking forward to unlocking more exciting technology for Disney+ subscribers in the future, which will include immersive IMAX signature sound by DTS," said Jon Kirchner, chief executive officer of Xperi. However, to fully enjoy all of the new and upcoming IMAX Enhanced features on Disney+ you will most likely need to own a 4K TV that is IMAX Enhanced certified as well as a capable sound system. Sony and TCL are the first TV brands to advertise IMAX Enhanced support. Sony is offering IMAX Enhanced movies through its Bravia Core streaming service but Disney+ is the first major streaming service to support the initiative. Expect the IMAX Enhanced features to show up on Disney+ Day (November 12). As part of the promotion you can get one month of Disney+ for $2, £2 or €2.
