Netflix's gaming service comes to Apple iOS

10 Nov 2021 | Rasmus Larsen |

Netflix Games launched worldwide on mobile Android last week and starting today you can also play the games on Apple iPad and iPhone. Netflix has reenabled in-app purchases.

Netflix Games on iOS

The five games, which are available at launch, must be downloaded separately from Apple's App Store. It is a consequence of Apple's app store rules that Microsoft took issue with publicly in 2020. Apple's own game service Apple Arcade works the same way. After downloading, users must log in to their Netflix account or create a new account from within the app – same subscription price as outside the app. Netflix previously abandoned "in-app" purchases, which gives Apple 30% commission in the first year and 15% afterwards, but is reenabling it in some form to lure in gamers.

All five game are compatible with both iPad and iPhone, besides Android mobile devices, and all games support Netflix user profiles. There is no word on plans for Android TVs and Apple TV. Hextech Mayhem: A League of Legends Story is coming soon. - "Just like our series, films and specials, we want to design games for any level of play and every kind of player, whether you’re a beginner or a lifelong gamer," said Mike Verdu, VP of Game Development, Netflix. "And we’re just getting started. We’re excited to continue improving our mobile gaming experience and adding to our entertainment offering in the months ahead." What about Smart TVs, game consoles, PC/Mac and other devices? Such platforms will require Netflix to adapt its technology and distribution method as discussed in our previous article about Netflix Games. Netflix's five games are available to download now from Apple's App Store and will be visible within the Netflix app very soon.
