OLED TV market grew 80% last year, LG OLED TV sales doubled

The global OLED TV market, comprising around 20 TV brands, grew 80% to more than 6.5 million units last year, according to analyst firm Omdia. LG Electronics is the clear leader in the field.

Further growth expected in 2022

Global TV shipments decreased to 213 million units in 2021 on weaker LCD TVs sales. Samsung is still the leading TV manufacturer, followed by LG, Sony, TCL and Hisense, as measured in revenue. In the growing market segment for OLED TVs, LG Electronics is the leading the brand with a 62% market share. LG Electronics shipped 4.04 million OLED TVs in 2021, with quarterly sales reaching record levels of 1.41 million in Q4, according to Omdia and a report by The Korea Herald. That is double the volume as compared to 2020.

OLED TVs will be available in sizes ranging from 42 to 97 inches this year

More than 6.5 million OLED TVs were sold globally in 2021 and sales are expected to reach 8 million in 2022. LG Display, the sole supplier of OLED TV panels until 2022, will increase production capacity while Samsung Display will enter the arena with QD-OLED. Also read: First look: QD-OLED displays LG Display is currently supplying OLED TV panels to around 20 brands including Bang & Olufsen, Changhong, Grundig, Hisense, Konka, Metz, LG Electronics, Loewe, Panasonic, Philips (TP Vision), Skyworth, Sharp, Sony, Toshiba, Vizio, and Xiaomi. OLED TVs are expected to take a 42% share of the high-end TV market (>$1500 TVs) in 2022 – a higher share than in 2021. Large-sized premium LCD TVs over 70 inches continue to be popular with consumers while +70-inch OLED TVs remain expensive.
