LG wants large and small theaters to install its new 'Miraclass' LED screens

10 Feb 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

LG has a new LED display solution to replace projectors in large and small movie theaters. 'Miraclass' can reach 4K resolution but a consumer product still seems far-off.

Like Samsung, LG has already persuaded some theatre chains to replace the projector with an LED display built from smaller modules. LG confirmed that the first Miraclass solution was recently installed in the Odeon theatre in Vilanova, and Miraclass will arrive soon to Odeon in Madrid and Barcelona.

- "LG is confident that LG Miraclass will satisfy the needs of operators and meet the expectations of moviegoers seeking memorable cinematic experiences," said Paik Ki-mun, SVP & head of Information Display, LG Electronics BSC "To accommodate rising demand and the diverse requirements of movie theater companies, more lineups and models will be introduced in the future."

LG's first generation of LED displays for theatres were known as 'LED Cinema' and Miraclass is the next step. It comes in four sizes from 14 to 101 square meters with either 2K or 4K resolution and a bit depth of up to 16 bits. It can be set to 48 (DC), 100, 130, 260, and 300 nits, and refresh at 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, 60 or 144Hz (3D). There is no mention of HDR support. These are real LED displays similar to the 'microLED' TVs showcased by consumer brands at trade shows. Adoption by movie theatres can help accelerate the development of consumer LED TVs, but unfortunately it still seems far-off. In addition to being module-based with visible seams, the smallest 14 sqm LG Miraclass weighs 465 kg and consumes 9700 W at 300 nits or roughly 4000 W at 48 nits. LG proclaimed that its Miraclass LED displays deliver incredible picture quality that can "help bring movies to life" and "improve the theater-going experience". The company did not disclose how much they cost.
