Google is sunsetting the Google Play Movies app used to buy and rent movies and TV shows. Starting mid-January 2024, you must use the YouTube app or the Shop tab on Android TVs.
The confirmation comes directly from Google in a community blog post rather than a press release.
- "We are making some changes to simplify how you purchase new movies or access the movies and TV shows you’ve purchased through Google. With these changes, Google Play Movies & TV will no longer be available on Android TV devices or the Google Play website," said Ward Harmon, Product Operations, Google TV.

How to access movies from 2024
You will still be able to access all of your previously purchased and rented movies and TV shows, Google says, across Android TV devices, Google TV, the Google TV mobile app, and the YouTube app.
The Google Play Movies app was removed from Smart TVs and Roku in June 2021.

Google mentioned that the movies section on the Google Play website will be removed "over the next few weeks depending on your location and country."
