The AV1 format is a royalty-free video format created by the Alliance for Open Media (Amazon, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Netflix, others). The specification was released in April 2018: https://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?s ... 1522918080

Some of the major players have started testing AV1.

Here are some of the AV1 video test files available:
Netflix (up to 1080p): http://download.opencontent.netflix.com ... 1/Chimera/
YouTube (up to 1080p) - also see comments section: https://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?s ... 1536822275

Link fix, sorry about that.

Starting spring 2019, we will start confirming whether or not TVs support AV1 format during our reviews.

Just a quick update here. Still no AV1 compatibility in any of the TVs that we have tested. I hear from people involved that they expect AV1 hardware decoding to show up in at least some TVs sometime in 2020.
