PC monitors of all kinds.

Can someone please explain the following statement from Rasmus Larsen's review of this monitor:

"Imagine, for example, a smooth color transition from dark red to bright red. Ideally this would be perfectly smooth displaying all the small steps in red. PA241W has an internal 3D LUT (look-up table) to ensure that this is done right. Basically the LUT analyzes colors before you see the pictures on the panel."

I think this has to do with the issue of banding in wide gamut monitors when used with 8-bit inputs. But what is the monitor actually doing? Is it a faithful representation of the image data?

Thanks.
