It was previously reported that Samsung had planned an investment review in April 2019. Korean Media now claim that Samsung will make "a final decision on investment in QD-OLED TV panels at the end of this month or early next month".

A source tells Business Korea that it is basically a done deal:

- "The company has decided to shift its focus to QD-OLED. It only needs to work out details for the conversion."

Samsung is expected to start volume production of QD OLED panels by 2021, according to the report.

More rumors out of Korea:

"Pressed to develop large-sized OLED panels for TVs, Samsung Display has made an unprecedented move to partner with a key supplier for its crosstown rival LG Display."

That partner is Yas and LG Display owns a share of the company so it is obviously aware of Samsung's plans. Yas confirms ongoing talks.

"We are in practical level talks, but the specs of the equipment we may supply have yet to be finalized,” said a Yas official. “Whether this would be a pilot program or for mass production will be decided once Samsung Display decides to invest."

Here's the latest round of rumors from Korea:

"A decision should be reached by August at the latest,"

"Some say that Samsung Display would eventually convert all of the LCD lines at L8 to achieve 120,000 panels a month,"

Unlike LG Display, Samsung Display's QD-OLED panels are manufactured with the Top Emission architecture with QD color conversion that allows for more color purity. LG display, on the other hand, goes with the Bottom Emission architecture that doesn’t deploy QD.

Samsung Display CEO Lee Dong-hoon told The Korea Herald, “The company is making good efforts” to launch QD-OLED panels in the near future.

Near future = 1 year? 2? 5? I don't think we'll hear anything at IFA next month but if Samsung is planning to launch something in 2020 they will probably announce something at CES in January.
