With the launch of its 2025 models, Sony has officially discontinued its last 8K TVs, with no direct successor planned. However, the company has not ruled out a future return.
Sony last introduced new 8K TVs in 2022 with the Z9K in 75- and 85-inch sizes.
The Z9K carried over into 2023 and 2024. Asked by FlatpanelsHD during the 2025 launch event, Sony confirmed that the Z9K is now officially discontinued and will only be available while stocks last.
What happens next?
In 2025, Sony will launch new high-end QD-OLED TVs with 4K resolution under the Bravia 8 II name, as detailed in our first look article here. The 2026 prototype LCD TV with RGB LED backlighting, which we saw in Japan, also features 4K resolution – at least in the smaller sizes.
Sony declined to comment on long-term plans but did not rule out an 8K return at a later stage.

PS5 Pro not driving interest in 8K
The timing is notable, as Sony recently launched the PlayStation 5 Pro with support for 8K output over HDMI 2.1 – although with limitations.
Even so, Sony's latest game console has not been enough to spark consumer interest in 8K for the living room.
Samsung still plans to offer two — possibly three — 8K TV ranges in 2025, but most other brands have exited the 8K TV market. LG has not introduced new 8K TVs since 2023.
