At CES 2014, LG is “extremely excited” to present their new webOS-powered Smart TVs. LG has also announced that their Ultra HD TVs with the webOS platform can stream Netflix in 4K. Netflix will start streaming in 4K later this year.

The new Smart TVs will revolutionize the business, says LG. LG has focused on creating a user-friendly and enjoyable Smart TV experience, acknowledging that previous efforts have not been good enough.

Over 70 new LG Smart TVs will be based on the webOS platform that is based on “cards” and controlled with LG’s motion-enabled Magic Remote. LG says that the webOS system can also recognize which external devices have been plugged into the TV, making it easier to control all peripherals.

The crucial question for LG is if they can get app developers to start developing apps for the new platform. FlatpanelsHD is in Vegas at CES so stay tuned for some hands-on impressions of the new webOS Smart TVs.

Netflix starts streaming in 4K

At LG’s press conference, Netflix’s Reed Hastings also announced that Netflix will start streaming in 4K resolution later this year. The first TV series to come in 4K will be the second season of House of Cards. Netflix will use HEVC to stream in 4K.

- “Streaming will be the primary way consumers receive Ultra HD 4K and we are excited to be working with LG to make this a reality later this year.” said Reed Hastings, Netflix CEO.

A total of 12 new 4K Smart TVs from LG will be able to stream Netflix in 4K in 2014, says LG. If other TV streaming services decide to start streaming in 4K - for example Amazon - LG’s TVs are ready.
