Game of Thrones is coming to UHD Blu-ray

05 Apr 2018 | Rasmus Larsen |

Season 1 of HBO’s blockbuster hit Game of Thrones will be released in 4K resolution with Dolby Vision HDR on UHD Blu-ray in June. The disc will also include Dolby Atmos.

Winter Is Coming

HBO’s Game of Thrones requires no formal introduction. The TV show, adapted from George R. R. Martin's fantasy novels, has captured the minds of viewers across the globe.

However, this is the first time that you can enjoy it in the best possible video and audio quality on UHD Blu-ray. The release will include the complete first season. No announcement has been made yet for the later seasons.

Game of Thrones has been shot digitally mostly on Arri Alexa and later Red Epic Dragon. The former camera delivers 2.8K resolution whereas the latter claims 6K resolution. The company says that the release “includes all 10 episodes beautifully redone in 4K format, to give fans the ultimate clarity and detail on HDR TVs.” This also includes Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos.

Game of Thrones

This is not HBO’s first title to be released on the high-quality disc format. HBO and Warner Bros released Westworld season 1 globally on UHD Blu-ray in November 2017. The Game of Thrones disc will also be released globally by Warner Bros

There is no word on an online release yet. HBO offers access to all episodes of its TV series through its subscription service HBO Now but it does not yet offer 4K and HDR quality.

Season 1 will be released on UHD Blu-ray on June 5. It includes more than 600 minutes of entertainment spanning 10 episodes plus lots of bonus features. The eighth and final season will air next year.
