Roku continues to grow

Roku is the leading TV platform ahead of Amazon FireTV and Apple TV (tvOS), according to estimates. So how many people actively use Roku's platform? 30.5 million accounts, according to the company's latest earnings report. Of course, accounts do not equal viewers. TV is a social activity so in many households family members will use the same account and oftentimes several family members will sit in front of the same living room TV. Roku does not provide an estimate of how many viewers its platform has. - "During Q2, we saw strong unit sales for both Roku TVs and players," the company added. "Player unit sales increased 36%, the highest growth in the last nine quarters."

Roku TV

In January 2019, Amazon claimed to have "well over" 30 million active users on its FireTV platform, which would seemingly put it ahead of Roku. However, Amazon's data has not been verified and it is not clear if Amazon is counting accounts or users. Roku added that its users streamed a total of 9.4 billion hours of entertain in the second quarter of 2019. That is up from 5.5 billion hours in the second quarter of 2018. - "When we founded Roku, we believed that one day all TV would be streamed, and that internet connectivity and modern software would revolutionize television for the consumer and the industry. It is exciting to see how much progress has been made," Roku said.
