Samsung 2022 "Neo QLED" LCD TVs gain Dolby Atmos, 4K 144Hz mode

04 Jan 2022 | Rasmus Larsen |

Ahead of CES 2022, Samsung has unveiled the first details about its new 8K LCD TVs (QN900B and QN800B) and 4K LCD TVs (QN95B, QN90B and QN85B).

Samsung 2022 LCD TVs

Samsung's new LCD TVs for 2022, known as 'Neo QLED', in most ways resemble the 2021 models. You get miniLED local dimming, sizes ranging from 43 to 85 inches, and the choice between 8K and 4K resolution. Samsung Display has started mass production of QD-OLED panels but Samsung Electronics has yet to announce any TV models based on the novel display technology to match modern OLED TVs from competitors like LG, Hisense, Panasonic, Philips, Sony and Vizio.

In the meantime, Samsung has upgraded its high-end LCD TVs with a 144Hz LCD panel and a 4K 144Hz mode. Only PCs support 4K 144Hz at this time – game consoles max out at 4K 120Hz. In 2022, Samsung will have four HDMI 2.1 ports with support for 4K120, VRR and AMD FreeSync Premium Pro as well as the new HDR10+ Gaming format. An upgraded video processor, Neo Quantum Processor' has improved object recognition to artificially enhance depth in images. The miniLED backlight can now be controlled in 16384 (14-bit) steps for better luminance control – the LCD panel is still 10-bit – although we stil expect to see blooming as there is no indications of a significant step up in the number of local dimming zones. Samsung did not provide full details on sizes and models but we will include the 2022 models in the TV Database as soon as possible.

Dolby Atmos but no Dolby Vision

For the first time, Samsung TVs will support Dolby Atmos. The TVs have been certified by Dolby and will be able to decode Dolby Atmos, meaning that you will get Dolby Atmos from streaming apps. There is also a new WiFi-based solution to wirelessly transmit Dolby Atmos to 2022 Samsung soundbars. The TV speakers can be used in combination with compatible soundbars through a system Samsung calls 'Object Tracking Sound Pro'. The flagship QN900B has a 6.2.4-channel speaker system with 90W and up-firing units. On there other hand there is still no support for Dolby Vision HDR in any form.

Samsung Tizen 2022

Samsung Tizen 2022

Samsung has revamped its Tizen homescreen. It is now full-screen user interface with a sidebar. The company refers to it as its vision for future Smart TVs. It will include new hubs including the Gaming Hub with Google Stadia and GeForce Now. There are other new features such as 'Smart Calibration' as detailed in the table below. No plans were announced to bring the latest version of Tizen to 2021 or previous generations of Samsung Smart TVs. The slim (16.7mm) 'Infinity One Design' will be extended to the 75-inch QN95B but otherwise still reserved for the 8K models, QN800B and QN900B. The external One Connect box has been reduced in size too. Pricing and availability details for the 2022 'Neo QLED' LCD models will be announced later.
