Sony unveils 2022 A95K QD-OLED TVs and A90K, A80K OLED TVs

Sony has today unveiled its 2022 OLED TV line-up with A95K being the new flagship model with QD-OLED panel technology. The company is also launching its first 42-inch OLED TV with A90K.

Sony has announced its first QD-OLED TV (A95K) where blue OLED is used in combination with quantum dots to create more saturated red and green. - "With millions of individual, self-illuminating pixels, the A95K delivers more colours than ever before for an entirely new viewing experience. This new innovation help us deliver the best and most immersive viewing experiences, authentically delivering the creator’s true intent," announced Sony Europe. What are the advantages of the QD-OLED panel type as compared to the existing WOLED panel type? QD-OLED can deliver better color at high luminance levels and even wider viewing angles, according to Sony. In addition, the panel in A95K has built-in heat diffusion and temperature mapping to reduce the risk of image retention. Peak brightness was not specified. Samsung Display, the sole manufacturer of QD-OLED, has previously detailed QD-OLED here.

A95K will be available in 55 and 65 inches at launch and be Sony's flagship TV for 2022. It will feature 4K resolution and Sony's 'XR Cognitive Processor'. Buyers can place the tabletop stand in a front (to hide the stand behind the TV) or back position (pictured above). With the introduction of A95K, Sony is expanding its OLED line-up and is no longer reliant solely on LG Display for OLED panels. Samsung Electronics is also expected to launch QD OLED TVs in 2022.

A90K will use LG Display's WOLED panel and be available in 42 and 48 inches. It will sit below last year's A90J, which will carry over into 2022. A80K will replace A80J as Sony's more affordable OLED model. A80K will be available in 55, 65, and 77 inches. Sony has not announced plans to launch a 97-inch OLED TV. All three models will inherit 2021 features like two HDMI 2.1 ports with 4K120 and VRR (supported at launch!) and the new PlayStation 5 features. • Google TV, Bravia Core and Netflix Adaptive

Like last year's models, Sony's 2022 OLED TVs will be powered by Google TV (Android 10) with access to streaming apps like Disney+ and Netflix. A new 'Sony' tab will be added to the Google TV homescreen to highlight Sony-specific features. In 2022, Sony OLED TVs will offer a Netflix Adaptive Calibrated Mode that adjusts the picture to match the viewing environment. For Netflix it can automatically adjust the luminance level (A80K and up) and the tone curve (A90K and up). Color temperature can be adjusted adaptively only with HDMI and tuner sources, and only on A95K – some of these features require the Bravia camera. Bravia Core, which was introduced in 2021 as a Sony-specific movie streaming service with free access to a selection of movies in the "highest streaming picture quality", now also has a calibrated mode.

    - "Bravia Core is a pre-loaded movie service that includes up to 10 movies to redeem and up to 24 months unlimited streaming with the purchase of a Bravia XR TV. With Bravia XR technology, Pure Stream and IMAX Enhanced, content is delivered with stunning visuals and expressive sound quality," the company said. "Over time, the app experience will be enriched with new features. Bravia Core will be available in over 75 countries in 2022." Sony's Acoustic Surface Audio speaker technology uses actuator-based vibration to emit sound from the actual OLED panel to make it sound as if voices come from the actors on-screen. A95K has 2x 20W actuators for stereo and 2x 10W subwoofers while A80K has three actuators for left (10W), right (10W) and center audio (10W for 55/65" and 20W for 77") plus two 10W subwoofers. A90K has 2x 10W actuators and a 5W subwoofer. If you want to connect a soundbar, Sony's Acoustic Center Sync feature will let you use the TV speakers in combination for improved center channel audio. There is a new remote control (comes bundled with A95K and A90K), which is smaller with fewer buttons (25 vs. 49 last year). The user can also ask a voice assistant to "find the remote". The TVs still come with features like Apple HomeKit and AirPlay 2.

A camera, which can be placed on top of the TV, will let the TV adjust the picture to match your surroundings and let the TV detect the viewer (requires firmware update) for automatic audio volume adjustment depending on the viewing distance as well as gesture control. The camera is called Bravia Cam and comes bundled with A95K but is otherwise optional. It supports video chat too. Pricing and retail availability will be announced at a later date.
