Disney's catalog of 4K HDR titles - including Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar - is finally rolling out on Google Play Movies, according to a report by 9to5Google. However, it is limited to purchases.

Disney has released new titles and a handful of catalog titles on UHD Blu-ray but it has been harder to find them online. Vudu is offering Disney titles in 4K Dolby Vision but on Apple iTunes and Google Play Movies video quality has been limited to HD.

Google Play has now finally started rolling out Disney movies, including titles from Marvel, Lucasfilm and Pixar, in 4K HDR. At launch, titles such as Avengers: Infinity War, Captain Marvel, The Lion King (1994), Coco, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and Black Panther are available in 4K HDR10. For a full list see the table below. Google is not offering Dolby Vision or Atmos.

At this time, 4K HDR from Disney is limited to purchases and each title will typically cost $20-25 dollars, which is more expensive than Google's HD versions. Rentals are being limited to HD resolution. It also appears to be limited to the US version of the Google Play Movies store. In many regions, Google has yet to launch the 4K option.

Google Play Movies will also be offering Avengers: Endgame in 4K HDR starting July 30. The company says that this is the first slate with more catalog titles rolling out over the coming months.



The launch puts pressure on Apple iTunes. iTunes has the most expansive catalog of 4K HDR titles but all Disney titles are limited to HD resolution. Apple has insisted that 4K HDR should be no more expensive than HD, which may be root of the problem. All other major studios offer 4K HDR movies through iTunes.

To enjoy 4K HDR streaming from Google Play Movies you must own a compatible device such as a 4K Android TV, Nvidia Shield, Samsung Smart TV (2017 or later), LG Smart TV (2016 or later) or Chromecast Ultra.
