TVs are inching closer to projector sizes and TCL is now launching its biggest TV yet in Europe. The 98-inch is available now for around 6500 Euro.

65-inch TVs started to become affordable in the 10's and more recently prices on 70- to 85-inch TVs – even 77-inch OLED TVs – have started to fall to more reasonable levels. The next step is TVs exceeding 90 inches in diagonal.

TCL launched the 98-inch R754 in the US earlier this year for around $8000. The European 98-inch version is known as C735. It is also available now in parts of Asia and the Middle East. In Europe, the TV costs around 6500 Euro.

Unlike the smaller C735 screen sizes, the 98-inch LCD TV is equipped with an LED zone dimming system (FALD) – but not miniLED.

TCL's mammoth is not the first of its kind but it is the first model that is relatively affordable. For comparison Samsung's 98-inch QN90A 4K TV costs roughly 15000 Euro and Sony's 98-inch ZG9 8K TV costs 80000 Euro. Later this week, LG will launch the first 97-inch 4K OLED TV that will cost 25000 Euro according to LG earlier this year – unless inflation has changed planning.

Under half price
Why is TCL's 98-inch LCD TV under half price compared to Samsung's? While Samsung has stopped producing LCD TV panels, TCL has its own LCD panel production under subsidiary company CSoT, which happens to also supply LCD panels to Samsung.

CSoT operates one of the most advanced LCD factories, a so-called 10.5G factory in China. This allows TCL to mass produce LCD panels at low cost in China.

TCL 98C735 features 4K resolution, a 100/120Hz LCD panel, LED zone dimming (as opposed to the other C735 sizes), Google TV (with Android 11) and two HDMI 2.1 ports with support for 4K120 input from consoles such as PS5 and Xbox Series X.
