Samsung Display confirms 2023 QD-OLED with 77", 2000+ nits peak brightness

Samsung Display, the panel maker, has confirmed that the 2023 QD-OLED line-up will include a 77-inch TV panel. It claims that the 2023 panels will reach more than 2000 nits peak brightness.

Samsung Electronics and Sony both source QD-OLED TV panels from Samsung Display, and FlatpanelsHD's sources say that more brands will enter the fray in 2023 – either at CES or later.

Ahead of the QD-OLED TV product announcements at CES 2023, Samsung Display has confirmed that 2023 QD-OLED will be available in 34 inches and now also 49 inches for monitors as well as 55 and 65 inches and now also 77 inches for TVs.

It has applied a "new OLED HyperEfficient EL material" to improve color brightness of each RGB pixel. It relates to "the blue emitting layer of QD-OLED. As a result, RGB light that passes through the QD color conversion layer is much brighter and the colors much clearer", the company explained.

More than 2000 nits

As a result, peak brightness for 2023 QD-OLED will reach more than 2000 nits, said Samsung Display, but it did not say at which color temperature. Last year, it specified the panel to 1500 nits but it did not quite reach those heights in the actual TV products (Sony A95K QD-OLED review). - "Samsung Display completed its 2023 lineup by adding QD-OLED displays to the super-large 77-inch TV, the largest in the QD-OLED family that also includes 55-, 65-, 34-inch displays as well as a 49-inch ultra-wide monitor. In particular, 2023 lineup products are applied with advanced optimization algorithm IntelliSense AI and new OLED HyperEfficient EL material improving the color brightness of each RGB. As a result, the maximum brightness of combined RGB color brightness becomes more than 2,000 nits realizing overwhelming image quality once again," announced Samsung Display. If true, QD-OLED should in 2023 meet or exceed MLA-based WOLED's peak brightness. MLA technology will be available in LG G3 and other OLED TVs this year. Reduced power consumption

Samsung Display said that the 2023 QD-OLED panel will also have up to 25% lower power consumption compared to the 2022 panel, although it did not provide details. - "The company announced that QD-OLED 2023 has reduced power consumption of 2022 model up to 25 percent by applying high-efficiency organic materials and more advanced AI technology. The consumers will be able to enjoy accurate colors and richer picture quality on bright screens as well as dark screens while reducing power consumption." 2023 QD-OLED TV models for the consumer market will be unveiled later this week at CES 2023.
