Sony and Philips will be the first TV makers to use MediaTek Pentonic chips

09 Jan 2023 | Rasmus Larsen |

All new Philips OLED TV ranges launched in 2023 will use MediaTek's significantly upgraded Pentonic 1000 chip while Sony has yet to confirm details. All Pentonic chips are Calman Ready.

The confirmation came as part of MediaTek and Portrait Displays' CES 2023 announcement that Pentonic 2000, Pentonic 1000 and Pentonic 700 will be the first Calman Ready TV chips.

Pentonic 1000 in 2023 Philips OLED TVs

Philips said that its 2023 OLED TVs will use Pentonic 1000, which is the most powerful Pentonic chip for 4K TVs with four HDMI 2.1 ports. It did not comment on the LCD line-up. Philips will announce its first batch of 2023 TVs this February. - "Philips TV's legacy in innovative excellence has arrived at a breakthrough in picture quality. In collaborating with Portrait Displays and MediaTek, all Philips OLED TV series launched in 2023 will achieve an outstanding level of high-quality picture performance utilizing Calman Ready and MediaTek Pentonic 1000," said Ken CM Liao, Senior Director of Global Product Management of the OBM BG at TPV Group.

Sony did not provide details other than saying that it will use one, or more, of the new Pentonic chips. Sony has confirmed to FlatpanelsHD that it will announce its 2023 TV line-up "later this spring". - "Designing televisions that faithfully convey the creator's intent is our passion. In addition to Sony’s integrated image processing algorithms, our strategic collaboration with Portrait Displays and MediaTek allows us to take the Smart TV visual experience to the next level. With accurate color calibration, customers can enjoy movies and TV shows precisely how they were meant to be viewed," said Yoshihiro Ono, Head of Home Entertainment Business Group of Sony Corporation. Philips and Sony are already using MediaTek chips in their existing Android TVs and Google TVs. Unlike Philips, Sony also offers 8K TVs which the Pentonic 2000 is intended for. You can see which chip is used in a given TV model in the TV Database. MediaTek has previously touted Pentonic 2000 as the first 7nm chip for TV displays. However, Apple TV 4K (2021) has been equipped with a 7nm chip since April 2021 while Apple TV 4K (2022) has a 5nm chip.

The Pentonic chip family is Calman Ready

Calman Ready TVs

As for Calman Ready integration, MediaTek-powered TVs preloaded with the Calman Ready app will allow calibrators and TV buyers with the right equipment to connect directly to Calman software and run automated calibrations for SDR and HDR. MediaTek Pentonic will support a wide variety of Calman calibration and display profiling solutions, "from 3x3 color correction matrixes to 1D/3D-LUT generation for high-precision color gamut, and grayscale corrections via Calman’s Aurora Color Engine", explained Portrait Displays. - "Our collaboration with MediaTek is an exciting step in making calibration more accessible for everyone," commented Eric Brumm, CEO of Portrait Displays. "MediaTek Pentonic smart TV chips offer solutions for TV manufacturers that fit every budget. With pre-configured Calman Ready functionality right on the chip, implementation of Calman AutoCal is greatly simplified."
