LG develops world's first 480Hz 1440p OLED panel

04 Jan 2024 | Rasmus Larsen |

LG Display is moving towards ultra-high refresh rates and has today announced the successful development of a 27" 480Hz OLED panel with 1440p resolution.

Competition in OLED is heating up between Samsung and LG.

After LG announced a 27" 240Hz 1440p OLED monitor late last year, we saw the emergence of a faster 27" 360Hz 1440p QD-OLED monitor from Samsung yesterday.

Today, LG Display is firing back by confirming that it has developed an even faster 27" 480Hz 1440p OLED panel that will be introduced in the first half of 2024.

- "LG Display's latest Gaming OLED display leverages the company's unique OLED technology, which allows each pixel to emit light independently without a backlight unit, to deliver an unprecedented 480Hz refresh rate, immersive QHD (2,560 x 1,440) resolution, and the fastest response time (0.03ms) of any panel on the market today, combining to realize the optimal gaming experience for avid gamers," announced LG Display. You may recall that LG has already announced a 32" 480Hz OLED monitor, but it is actually a 4K 240Hz monitor that can run 480Hz at Full HD resolution via a special 'Dual-Hz' mode. This upcoming 27" panel delivers 480Hz at its native 1440p resolution.

MLA technology in monitors

LG Display's latest OLED monitor panels all utilize MLA (Micro Lens Array) technology to boost brightness. - "To strengthen our leadership in the high-end gaming display market, we will continue to harness the power of OLED's distinctive qualities such as ultra-high refresh rates, fast response times, and perfect black for next-level viewing experiences," said Won-seok Kang, VP and Head of Large Display Product Planning Division at LG Display. The upcoming 27" panel will be part of a line-up already spanning 27, 32, 34, 39, and 45" panels that you will see in new monitors from LG Electronics, Asus, HP, and other brands this year. LG Display will reveal more news about 2024 OLED panels at CES 2024 next week, so stay tuned for more reports on FlatpanelsHD.
