A.I. will replace 90% of animation jobs, predicts DreamWorks co-founder

The creation of animated movies in the future will largely be taken over by AI-powered tools, according to co-founder of DreamWorks SKG Jeffrey Katzenberg.

In a speech on Bloomberg TV late last year, via IndieWire, the co-founder of DreamWorks shared his perspective on the future of the movie animation industry.

- "I don't know of an industry that will be more impacted than any aspect of media, entertainment, and creation," remarked Jeffrey Katzenberg about AI.

DreamWorks Animation is known for animation franchises such as Shrek, Trolls, How to Train Your Dragon, and Kung Fu Panda.

10x the impact of digital technology

He sees AI technology as the next evolutionary leap from the pen, paintbrush, printing press, still camera, and movie camera, but with significantly greater ramifications. - "If you look at how media has been impacted in the last 10 years by the introduction of digital technology, what will happen in the next 10 years will be 10x as great," he asserted.

It is a daunting prospect for anyone in the field. Katzenberg explained that previously it would require around 500 animation artists five years to complete a DreamWorks Animation movie. - "Literally, I don't think it will take 10 percent of that," he said, referring to a timeline of just three years from now. However, he also highlighted the huge potential of AI technology while he envisions humans in the future as 'prompters', directing AI tools on what needs to be achieved. - "And I think AI as a creative tool — think of that as a new paintbrush or a new camera — has so much opportunity around it." - Source: Bloomberg TV via IndieWire
